In the United States the Chardonnay grape is grown mostly in California and 50% of the grapes grown in California are of this variety. The Chardonnay became the most popular grape in California vineyards because of its fame among winemakers and its cultivation has spread beyond California and over to areas like Washington, Oregon, Long Island and the Niagara Peninsula as well. Although this grape has its failings it tends to be sturdier that most other varieties.
